When we gaze upon the American flag, how often do we pause to reflect on the invaluable contributions of about African American Patriots during the American Revolution? This pivotal moment in history deserves our attention, yet it remains an often-overlooked aspect of our nation’s past.

 During the American Revolution the military enlisted approximately 5,000 free and enslaved men as combatants and noncombatants in racially integrated units. However, did the forefathers consider the consequences of Black Patriots regarding liberty, slavery, and citizenship rights?

 After the war the military was racial segregated until President Truman’s Executive Order 9981 in 1948. BHS can create customized presentations or webinars to explore the American Revolution and its enduring relevance to military and civilian history in the United States.

Discussing slavery and religion can be challenging, but enriching presentations with questions and answers foster conversation about African American history, slavery, and religion.

Europeans used religion to justify the transatlantic slave trade and slavery because West Africans were considered non-Christian. However, Africana did have a rich history of traditional African religions, Christianity, and Islam before the transatlantic slave trade.

In Virginia, the Church faced internal problems in the 1600s, offering Christian salvation but supporting legal systems that denied Africans rights to marriage, families, and freedom. This showed the Church’s complicated views on morality and Christian doctrine. In the mid-1800s, people began to pay more attention to Black worshippers and put limits on Black preachers after Nat Turner’s rebellion.
